Tactical Tracking

April 21 - April 22

The tracking techniques taught in this class are designed for search and rescue personnel, hunters, outdoor enthusiasts and law enforcement personnel.  The basics of tracking haven’t changed in thousands of years and this class will offer a solid understanding of tracking techniques, kinds of tracking, and sign cutting.  The course however, will also introduce several tools and techniques to allow the tracker to perform more efficiently and enhance their chances of success.  Additionally, there will be a tactical aspect of the course designed to allow a tracker to perform safely in a non-hospitable environment such as tracking an armed or dangerous criminal.

The course will consist of a mix of classroom lecture and a lot of field work.  This is a very hands-on course and students will be expected to participate and get dirty!

Although this course will not be overly physical in nature, the student will spend a considerable amount of time standing, walking (perhaps at a crouch), crawling and getting up and down.  Please make sure you are comfortable with this amount of physical exertion!

Required equipment;

  • Field appropriate clothing (long, loose pants and light long sleeves, ankle supporting footwear, cap or round brimmed hat are recommend)
  • Environmental protection like rain gear, bug spray and sunscreen
  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Pocket flashlight, LED or incandescent
  • Compass
  • Small pocket tape measure or cloth tape
  • Camera (cell phone will work) need to be able to review your pictures from the device
  • Flagging tape (engineers tape or hunters tape)
  • Kit bag to hold items.  We recommend a back-pack type with a hydration system.  Does not have to be large, daypack size
  • Primary and secondary weapon systems and retention for them (holster, sling)
  • Any duty gear or tactical gear you might wear operationally (vest, helmet, LBV etc)
  • 100 rounds handgun, 250 carbine
  • Eye and ear protection

Note: You do not need to bring weapons or tactical gear to attend and participate.

Each student will make a “stride stick”.  We will have materials available for this process, but if you have a walking stick or shooting pole that you would like to use please bring it.  Old ski poles, golf club handles and the like are also great for stride sticks.

Cost $350
